About Cheondoism

A Korean religion that grew from the Donghak, or Eastern Learning, movement founded by Choe Je-u. It teaches that humans carry divinity within. The Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 drew on its followers. Cheondoists played a leading role in the March First Movement for independence in 1919.
