About Mithraism
A mystery religion of the Roman Empire centered on the god Mithras, popular among soldiers. Worshippers met in cave-like temples called mithraea, where the central image shows Mithras slaying a bull. Its initiates passed through seven grades. It declined as Christianity became dominant in the 4th century.
